چکیده

Abstract. The development and validation of management practices to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock require accurate emission measurements. This study assessed the accuracy a practical inverse dispersion modelling (IDM) technique quantify methane (CH4) emitted small cattle herd (16 animals) confined 63 m × 60 experimental pen. IDM calculates increase in CH4 concentration measured downwind animals. measurements were conducted for 7 d. Two types open-path (OP) sensors used measure calculation: Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (IDM-FTIR) or laser (IDM-Laser). actual rate was with tracer-ratio using nitrous oxide (N2O) as tracer gas. We found very good agreement between two estimates (308.1 ± 2.1 – mean SE 304.4 8.0 g head−1 d−1 IDM-FTIR IDM-Laser respectively) (301.9 1.5 d−1). suggests that measurement approach can provide an method estimating emissions.

Evaluating dispersion modeling options to estimate methane emissions from grazing beef cattle.

Enteric methane (CH) emission from cattle is a source of greenhouse gas and is an energy loss that contributes to production inefficiency for cattle. Direct measurements of enteric CH emissions are useful to quantify the magnitude and variation and to evaluate mitigation of this important greenhouse gas source. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of stocking density of catt...

Methane emissions from cattle.

Increasing atmospheric concentrations of methane have led scientists to examine its sources of origin. Ruminant livestock can produce 250 to 500 L of methane per day. This level of production results in estimates of the contribution by cattle to global warming that may occur in the next 50 to 100 yr to be a little less than 2%. Many factors influence methane emissions from cattle and include th...

Modelling the Effect of Diet Composition on Enteric Methane Emissions across Sheep, Beef Cattle and Dairy Cows

Enteric methane (CH ₄ ) is a by-product from fermentation of feed consumed by ruminants, which represents a nutritional loss and is also considered a contributor to climate change. The aim of this research was to use individual animal data from 17 published experiments that included sheep ( n = 288), beef cattle ( n = 71) and dairy cows ( n = 284) to develop an empirical model to describe enter...

Eating beef: cattle, methane and food production.

A number of prominent people have advocated eating less meat or becoming a vegetarian to reduce global warming, because cattle produce the greenhouse gas methane. This raises a number of questions including: what will happen to the grasslands that much of the world's cattle currently graze; how will alternate protein be produced, and what will the greenhouse consequences of that production be? ...
